The latest New York State test results carry a message for parents of younger children: math gaps are far easier to address while they are still small.
If your child is in elementary school and seems to be doing reasonably well in math, it's tempting to assume everything is on track.
Homework gets done. Report cards look fine. Your child knows their multiplication facts, finishes worksheets, and may even say math is "easy."
But the latest data from the New York State Education Department give parents a reason to look more closely.
According to preliminary results from the 2026 New York State Mathematics Assessment, only 47% of eighth-grade students statewide scored at the proficient level — the lowest proficiency rate of any tested grade.
In other words, more than half of New York's eighth graders did not demonstrate grade-level proficiency in math on the state assessment.
And the pattern is the part worth noticing: in the early grades, proficiency runs much higher — around 60% in third and fourth grade — and then slides year over year, reaching its lowest point in eighth grade.
That doesn't mean more than half of New York's children are "bad at math." And a state test is only one measure of a child's abilities.
But it raises a question for every parent of a younger student:
How do you know your child is building the mathematical foundation he or she will need several years from now?
The warning signs may appear long before middle school
Math is unusually cumulative.
A child who hasn't developed a strong understanding of place value may still learn the procedures for addition and subtraction. A child who doesn't really understand multiplication can memorize times tables. A child who struggles with fractions can sometimes learn enough rules to get through a worksheet.
For a while, those gaps can be surprisingly hard to see.
But mathematics keeps building on what came before.
Whole-number operations lead to fractions and decimals. Fractions lead to ratios and proportional reasoning. Those concepts become essential to percentages, algebra, geometry, and eventually higher mathematics.
As the material grows more sophisticated, relying on memorized procedures becomes harder and harder — which is one reason proficiency rates fall as students move from the early grades toward eighth.
That is why waiting until a child struggles can mean waiting too long.
The state test isn't really the problem
New York administers annual mathematics assessments beginning in Grade 3. They're designed to measure how well students are mastering the state's grade-level learning standards.
Parents sometimes respond to an approaching state test by looking for test-preparation programs.
But test preparation and mathematical preparation are not the same thing.
Learning the format of a test can be useful. Practicing sample questions can make a child more comfortable. But neither substitutes for understanding the mathematics underneath the questions.
A student with strong number sense, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving skills shouldn't have to relearn mathematics specifically for a state assessment.
The better strategy is to build the foundation before test preparation ever becomes necessary.
Why the elementary years matter so much
For parents of children in kindergarten through fifth grade, middle school can seem far away.
Mathematically, it isn't.
These are the years in which children develop many of the concepts they'll rely on for the rest of their education.
Consider fractions.
A younger student may first meet a fraction simply as part of a whole. But within a few years that same child needs to compare fractions, find equivalent fractions, add and multiply them, convert between fractions and decimals, and use them in ratios and percentages.
If the original concept was never fully understood, each additional layer becomes harder.
The same thing happens with place value, multiplication, division, and problem solving.
Small gaps compound. So does strong understanding.
A child who develops a deep mathematical foundation early doesn't just have an easier time on next spring's test. That child enters each successive grade prepared to learn the next level of mathematics.
How can you tell whether your child really understands math?
Grades alone don't always answer the question.
Try something different.
Instead of asking your child to calculate an answer, ask:
"Why?"
Why does that method work?
Can you solve it another way?
Can you draw a picture showing what's happening?
Can you explain your answer without using the rule you memorized?
What would happen if I changed this number?
A child who understands mathematics can increasingly reason about it, not simply reproduce a procedure.
That distinction is central to Singapore Math.
What Singapore does differently
Singapore's approach to mathematics is built around developing deep understanding before moving to abstraction.
Students typically progress from concrete experiences, to pictorial representations, and finally to abstract mathematical notation. Visual models — including the well-known bar model — help children see the mathematical relationships inside a problem rather than just hunt for a formula.
The objective isn't to race ahead.
It's to make the foundation unusually strong.
Children learn not only how to calculate an answer, but why the mathematics works and how to apply what they know when a problem looks unfamiliar — abilities that matter more and more as mathematics grows complex and as assessments ask students to reason and problem-solve rather than simply calculate.
Don't wait for a test score to discover a gap
The latest New York results shouldn't cause parents to panic.
They should cause parents to check.
If your child is in Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, you have something the parents of an eighth grader who has just discovered a significant math gap don't have:
time.
Time to identify misconceptions.
Time to strengthen number sense.
Time to develop problem-solving habits.
Time to build confidence before math becomes a source of frustration.
And time to make sure your child reaches middle school prepared for what comes next.
The question isn't whether your child can pass this year's math class.
The more important question is:
Is your child building the mathematical foundation they'll need three, five, and eight years from now?
